Inquiry - My email to Corning Glass

The Year Six’ at Sherwood Primary are learning more and more about our upcoming exhibition. Recently we were talking about taking action and learning more by doing so. I wanted to inquire into learning about glass because I liked the video that I watched, called ‘A Day Made of Glass’.

There is a company called Corning, who make awesome videos about how glass might be used in the future, which I was particularly interested in. I took action by emailing the company, saying that I admired their work and wanted to find out more. I asked if they were making any more “Day made of glass” videos, and got a reply from the Corning company all the way in New York, America!!!!! They said that they appreciated my enthusiasm in wanting to know more. They wished me luck in my future endeavours and introduced me to new resources  to help my learning, such as their youtube channel. Taking action is the key.

Writing - Stu Duval’s writers workshop

On Thursday the 4th of July, I went to the multi talented Stu Duval’s writers workshop. Stu Duval is so talented. He can draw cartoons, draw amazing pictures with pastels and my favorite quality about him, he can write awesome stories. Stu Duval’s workshop is like a small meeting, with three selected students from classes in the school. Stu Duval taught us how to stock our brain with ideas, just like you would stock a pantry with food. He told us the special key to writing the “why” key. Just look around the room and find an object. For example a chess game. Ask yourself why, why is there are chess game there. Maybe a magic wizard waved his wand and sent it there. Then ask again, why , why did the wizard send it there and so on until you're done. Voila, you have a fabulous story!!!! Next minute you could be writing a story about explosions and world war one, and to think, it all started with a chess game. Stu Duval is my hero.

Inquiry - My Epic Body System Presentation

In term 1, my class and I learnt about body systems and now in term 2 we could choose how we wanted to present what we have researched, so I made an awesome mobile about the integumentary system. The integumentary system is simply just your skin, hair, nails and your sweat glands. If you don’t know what a mobile is look at this picture of me presenting my work.
I'm really proud of my work because it is very different to everybody else's and it was the first time I  created the mobile but it turned out great.

Music - The Arts Festival

The arts festival is a group of kids specially taught by our music teacher Mrs Davison. There are 14 schools performing as well as us at the Bruce Mason Center. At the end of the show we sing Aotearoa together.
Over the past lunchtimes, a cluster of approximately 30 students practiced a dance, we dance to “Life in Sunshine” by Jamie Mcdell, with an added in rap about our multi cultural school.
I’m really happy with our performance, and hope everybody else is too.

Our arts festival group consists of a maximum of 17 schools and our teacher Mrs Davidson. The arts festival group will be singing and dancing to the song Life in Sunshine with an added in rap about our multi-cultural  differences. I believe joining the arts festival was a great choice for me to make because the arts festival allows me to share my feelings through singing and dancing and its so much fun.
Rebecca

Arts festival is a cluster of schools who have joined a group. We are all performing at the Bruce Mason center on the 26 of June in front of more than 2000 people. My school is doing a dance to “Life in Sunshine” by Jamie Mcdell. We all  get to wear clothes that represent our  country. We had a really hard time choreographing it all but we're finally finished.  I bet we're all terrified for the big night. I feel sorry for our amazing music teacher Mrs Davidson. She gave up all of her lunchtime and so did we, she is tired and so are we. - By GYPSY

In Term Two, 28 awesome student in year 6 chose to do a show in Week Eight in front of 2,000 people. We have practised so hard and so long it has been so tiring but fun. I think our awesome music teacher Mrs Davidson has worked really hard so I am really proud of her because she has had a lot of success. - by Tyllah-Rose

Reading - The Cupcake Club Series

Lately, I have been reading an awesome series called the Cupcake Club by Coco Simon. Bite into the lives of four cupcake crazed girls who all share a love for cupcakes. Join them on their journeys to fighting bullies, dealing with annoying brothers and running their own cupcake business. I love these books because of the humour and delicious cupcake recipes. I highly recommend these books to people who love to read friendship books and of course people who love cupcakes.

Inquiry - body systems

Zach, Zeke and I (Sam) created an awesome Weebly - a website that is free to get and you can share your ideas. I had made one about two years ago, when I was in year 4. It was about floods. Back to body systems. This year, I made mine about the Muscular System and Zach and Zeke did theirs on the Nervous System. We made our headings colourful by using Flaming Text. The good thing about publishing on a Weebly is that its not like a poster because for that you have to print in colour to make it colourful. I felt excited because I remembered how to do it and discovered a lot of things I couldn’t do before. I think Weeblys are fun.   Here is a link to it.

Inquiry - My Body System Poster

When my class started our new inquiry, we had to choose what system we wanted to research about, so I decided to find out “All About The Respiratory (Res-pi-ra-tory) System”. I was  so bored at first, but that was only because I had to read books and go onto the computer to get all my info and none of them had the right information that I needed. Then I wrote down my information on paper for a draft, after that I drafted it on the computer in Google Drive. I edited my work with some help from my classmates and my amazing teacher,‘Mrs Willemse’.  I started publishing my work on Comic Life, but it didn’t turn out like I thought it would. Instead of it being a comic, it looked like a poster, that’s why I changed to publish on a poster. I went onto Pages to copy my work off of Google Drive, then my teacher printed my work with the copier. While Mrs Willemse was printing my work, I started creating my poster. On the front, it looks so boring because all it says is“The Respiratory System”“ By Flynn Ivatt”, but inside,  it looks so cool! I put all my published work on it and I drew my own lung picture, it may be 2 things inside of it, but it is awesome! While I was making my last paragraph, it was tidying-up time and it was Tuesday and while I was doing the date for the teacher, I realized I was supposed to present the next day and I wasn’t finished, so I didn’t get to present. Next time I wish I could have more time and make up my mind about how to present, earlier.
Reflection: I may not have finished, but I’m proud of my work and I had fun. :) :} :] :D :/ :>

Reading - The Hunger Games

I am going to share with you guys about the amazing thrilling Hunger Games book. Every year there is a reaping day. On that day two tributes from each district get selected for the games. Tributes are basically two people. There are thirteen districts but the thirteenth got destroyed. Primrose Everdeen gets chosen for district 12 (the Mining district) but her sister Katniss Everdeen volunteered & took Prim’s place in the games. The hunger games is a fight to the death. Winning means fame and fortune but losing mean certain death. If you want a fantastic action book I recommend this to people age 13 and up. You have to read this amazing book!!!!

Inquiry - Our Class Google Drive

Google Drive was handy, easy and free! The drive was awesome, because it could hold our whole classes work. I prefer Google Drive more than a class server because I could work at home with my parents so that they could help me with my learning. Drive was one of the main resources in our body systems unit. We typed up all of our paragraphs that we had written. Next, we had to get three people to peer review our work for two good reasons. One - they had to find out about our amazing body systems and two - to check that it made sense or if the spelling was correct. And handiest of all, I could just copy and paste all of my writing onto keynote for my presentation. I recommend using Google Drive if you need a place to store your schoolwork when you want to catch up at home.

Inquiry - Body Systems Presentation!

I went through an amazing adventure to find out about the bodies different systems. I learned that there are more systems in the body that I first thought and they have many different names. It’s an amazing journey  that you go on to find out about all the different systems in the body. There are the Muscular system, the Skeletal system and many more. I thought of creating a science board for my presentation because it was a great way of sharing all my hard work. I’m trying to keep my body healthy and active now that I have learned what will happen to me if I don’t. What will you do?

Inquiry - Our Learner Profile Posters!

In the first term my class and I designed a learner profile poster which showed what learner profile we thought we were. ( Learner profiles are attributes that our school uses. E.g-Principled means doing the right thing and being honest.) Mine was balanced, caring, communicator and open-minded. We also linked our body parts to add more description. You’ve just got to see these pictures!

Reading -Cloud Busting

The book I read is called “Cloud Busting”.
I really like this book because the book is about a very unusual friendship between two friends.
It’s simple to read and written in rhyme. The story is a little sad..
I highly recommend this book to people who enjoy friendship books.

Fundraising - Ice Blocks

On Thursdays during term 1 this year, the year 6’s at Sherwood Primary School were selling delicious ICE BLOCKS, $1 each, during lunch time for a fundraiser that will lead us to an amazing camp! That project saved us a lot of money from our original price. I personally think it is a superb way to fund raise for any excursion.

Tech In A Sec - iPad Apps To Try

In our class, we have many varieties and ways to learn - But let’s forget about them - let’s talk about the educational and awesome apps on the iPads.  Here are a few you might like to try:

Meteor Math - Explode the meteors to make the correct sum for the answer.( You can choose multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.)

And Flowline - Strain your brain by linking the coloured dots together to complete the level.

Be sure to try these great apps out and many more. Our class loves them!

Reading - Eragon Inheritance Book One

Eragon - Inheritance Book One
Eragon Inheritance is one of my most favourite novels written by Christopher Paolini. I don’t recommend this story to little children because it might be a little too violent for their liking, but it’s got the best language a book could possibly have. I thought this was a great book because a dragon was chosen to be the main character. This story genre would be a Fantasy (this means something about wizards and dragons). If you are a person that loves, or even obsessed over Fantasy, I recommend this book to you!

Art- ANZAC Poppies

The Left one is mine and the Right one is my friend Caylea's
The spectacular Rata W was thinking about all the wars that people on earth have been having over the years and all those innocent men fighting without a choice. So Rata W decided to paint poppies to show our glorious appreciation. They look fantastic! Here is a picture of my poppy that I made.

Inquiry - My awesome science board!

I found it really fun to make a science board about the skeletal system because I learned all about the bones and how they work. I had a fantastic time decorating it! I decided to make a science board because it was a good way to share what I learned and also I liked presenting it because the board shows all the sides and it’s an amazing way to display all your work. I have included a photo to show you what mine looks like.

Art - Self Portraits

About two months ago we made some self portraits to represent how we are unique. I drew a self portrait that shows my personality and a little something about my self. I made my hair blond so making the background blue made my hair stand out. We had to write about what we like about ourselves. We all started by drawing the eyes. To make the eyes look realistic we added the white glow in to the pupil. It took three weeks to finish but it was all amazing. Here’s my self portrait.

We also looked at this fantastic and thought provoking book:

We analysed the Statistics presented in the book 'If the world were a village.'
and presented the information as a 100 chart. Then we applied that to our class of 25 students to see how it would affect us.
Here are two of our presentations - click on the links to view the videos:

Who has water, pollution and sanitation?
